Question
If JKR wrote about Neville Longbottom instead of Harry Potter would you still read the series?
Answer
I like Nevilles character more then Harrys, in fact I have said it joking before that the books would be so much better if they were called quotNeville Longbottom and the insert title of the hp books herequot However it would drastically change things, like the Theterrianking mentioned Neville would have been raised to be a more confident person. Since his quotGrandquot probably wouldnt try to force his father legacy on him she, probably would have bought him his own wand rather than simply handing him his fathers. I think this might cause a significant change in Nevilles behavior. Its a personal theory of mine that having his fathers wand was part of the reason why he was so clumsy. For two reasons one being that just because the wand is compatible with Frank doesnt necessarily mean that the same would hold true for his son. The other is the psychological effect that it has on Neville, knowing that this grandmother gave him his fathers wand, I think it sent a very clear message to him that she wanted him to be exactly like him, which is of course impossible for anyone to try to be any one else. So he would feel pressured and insecure about not measuring up. Needless to say if Neville was the boy who lived he would have been raised to be more confident since the beginning making him a less interesting character since its his personal transformation that makes him so awesome! Its also funny to think of how Harry would have turned out, I get the feeling he would probably be annoyingly cocky and overly sure of himself. His aspirations would be to, one day play seeker for the Chuddley Cannons rather then being an auror. Hed still be good person in the end but seriously irritating a lot like James. Making Harry too half of the character he used to be. It would also be odd and maybe some what difficult to keep up with quotNeville Longbottom and The Philosiphers Stonequot since youre being immediately plunged into the wizarding world rather than being introduced to it slowly, threw the eyes of someone you was raised by muggles. Would I still read it? Probably but, as much as I hate to admit it because Neville is one of my favorite characters and Harry Potter irritates me a a lot even if he a great hero, I think it would probably effect the story negatively.
